Who is Adrian Belew?

Early life and real name

Adrian Belew: Robert Steven Belew was born into a middle-class family in Covington, Kentucky, on December 23, 1949. Initially known to his friends and classmates as Steve, he played drums during his adolescence. He performed with the Ludlow High School marching band and later joined the high school cover band the Denems.

Inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Adrian took up the guitar while he was bedridden with mononucleosis. At the age of seventeen, he gained further inspiration after watching a live performance by Lonnie Mack, who later became a close friend of his. Not inclined to formal music study, Adrian primarily taught himself the guitar by listening to records.

Work with Frank Zappa and David Bowie

In 1977, while playing with the cover band Sweetheart in Nashville, Adrian was discovered by Frank Zappa. Zappa eventually hired him as a guitarist and vocalist for a year. Adrian toured with Zappa in 1977 and 1978, and he appeared on the 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti and the concert film Baby Snakes.

On the recommendation of Brian Eno, David Bowie approached Adrian after a concert in Berlin. Adrian accepted an offer to join Bowie's touring band and served as lead guitarist and backing vocalist on the 1978 Isolar II world tour. He was also featured on Bowie's 1979 studio album Lodger and later returned as musical director for the 1990 Sound+Vision Tour.

King Crimson and solo career

Adrian served as the frontman, second guitarist, and occasional drummer for King Crimson from 1981 to 2009. His involvement with the group began after Robert Fripp invited him to join a new band following Adrian's work with David Bowie and the group GaGa. He maintained this position through several band splits and hiatuses over the decades.

Alongside his band work, Adrian released nearly twenty solo albums through Island Records and Atlantic Records. His 1989 solo single Oh Daddy charted on the US Billboard Hot 100. Also, his 2005 single Beat Box Guitar received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
