Biography
Who is Aloe Blacc?
Early life and education
Aloe Blacc: Born Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins in Newport Beach, California, the musician grew up in the Laguna Hills area. He showed an early interest in music during elementary school when he began learning to play the trumpet. This instrument played a role in his formative years, as he eventually moved beyond classroom practice to treat music with serious intent. His childhood was also shaped by exposure to hip-hop culture, specifically the work of LL Cool J, which he credited as a significant influence alongside his jazz training.
Musical beginnings and Emanon
The artist began his professional path in 1995 by teaming up with producer Exile to form the hip-hop duo Emanon. The group took their name from the Dizzy Gillespie song Emanon, which is the word no name spelled backward. They became recognized within the indie rap scene for their use of jazz samples and breakbeat loops. Their early projects included the 1996 demo Imaginary Friends and the 1999 EP Acid 9.
Solo career and Good Things
In 2003, the singer launched his solo career, eventually signing with Stones Throw Records in 2006. His first full-length solo album, Shine Through, was released that same year and earned attention for its mix of soul and funk influences. By the time he worked on his second studio album, his artistic focus had shifted toward songwriting as a way to express more than just ego. This approach culminated in the 2010 release of the album Good Things.
Collaborations and recent work
A major turning point occurred in 2013 when he co-wrote and provided vocals for the Avicii song Wake Me Up. The track reached number one in over 100 countries and became the fastest-selling single in the UK at that time. This collaboration opened doors for further high-profile work, leading him to sign with Interscope Records and release the album Lift Your Spirit.
