Who is Alsou?
Early life and family background
Alsou was born in Bugulma in the Russian SFSR of the Soviet Union. Her father worked as an executive and later became a member of the Russian parliament, while her mother trained as an architect. When she was one year old, her family relocated to Siberia before eventually living in Moscow and later moving to the United Kingdom to attend a private architecture college.
Music interested her from an early age, prompting her to ask her parents for a piano at age five so she could attend a private music school. During her brother's wedding celebration on the bank of the Moskva River, she sat at the grand piano and performed a song that convinced her family she should pursue a professional singing career.
Rise to fame and Eurovision
At age fifteen, Alsou met music manager Valeriy Belotserkovskiy and quickly began her professional path. Her self-titled debut Russian album released in September 1999 achieved big success in Russia, spawning several hit singles and selling hundreds of thousands of legal copies.
In 2000, she recorded the single "Solo" and represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in second place and securing broad European recognition. Later, she also hosted the final of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Moscow.
Albums and international career
Following her Eurovision success, she launched a large-scale tour across Russia and began working on English language material. Her debut English album was released in several European countries and Malaysia, supported by the lead single "Before You Love Me".
She released her second Russian album titled "19" in January 2003, which received strong sales and critical praise. Later, she worked for nearly four years on a second English album titled "Inspired", and eventually released her third Russian album "Samoe Glavnoe".
Personal life
Alsou married Yan Abramov in March 2006 at a reception in Moscow. Together they welcomed children including daughters Safina and Mikella, as well as a son named Rafael. The couple later filed for divorce, which was finalized in August 2024.
Standing at a height of 173 centimeters, she has maintained a prominent presence in Russian entertainment and politics, having joined the United Russia party and receiving honors such as the Merited Artist of Russia award.
