Who is André Ooijer?
Early life and football beginnings
André Ooijer was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He began playing for his first amateur football team when he was five years old. As a twelve year old, he spent time playing for other amateur clubs known as SDW and SDZ.
He eventually entered the Ajax Amsterdam youth system. He remained part of that academy until he reached the age of 20. Seeking more first team opportunities, he went on loan to FC Volendam for the 1994–95 season before signing with Roda JC Kerkrade for the 1995–96 season.
Club career highlights
During his time with Roda JC, André played primarily at right-back but could also play as a centre-back or defensive midfielder. His performance led to a move to PSV Eindhoven during the 1997–98 season. At PSV, he won five Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Cup. He also competed regularly in the UEFA Champions League.
In 2006, he signed with the English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers for a fee of approximately £2 million. Although he faced early challenges, including a broken fibula and torn ankle ligaments in 2007, he became a consistent part of their defense. He scored two goals for the club, including a winner against Tottenham Hotspur F.C. In 2009.
International career and coaching
André Ooijer earned 57 caps for the Netherlands national team over more than ten years. He was part of the 1998 FIFA World Cup squad and played in the 2006 World Cup, where he started all four matches. He also competed in UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was part of the starting lineup for a victory against Brazil. He was also a member of the squad that reached the tournament final. Following his playing days, he moved into coaching by working with the PSV Eindhoven under-19 squad and serving as an assistant coach starting in the 2014–15 season.
Personal life and family
André Ooijer is married to Joyce van de Kerkhof. She is the daughter of the former Dutch footballer Willy van de Kerkhof. The couple has two daughters named Demi and Danique.
He also has two sons, Denzell and Cerezo, from a previous relationship. He was born in Amsterdam and is a Dutch national.
