Early life and background
Anthony Kiedis was born in Grand Rapids, United States, on November 1, 1962. His father was Blackie Dammett, who worked as an actor. Anthony spent his early childhood years living in Grand Rapids before moving to Hollywood around the time of his twelfth birthday. While living in California, he attended Fairfax High School and later took classes at the University of California, Los Angeles, though he did not finish his second year.
During his school years in Los Angeles, Anthony met future bandmates Flea and Hillel Slovak. The group bonded over shared interests and a rebellious streak. Anthony experienced a turbulent youth involving drug use alongside his father, but he also pursued creative avenues, landing minor acting roles in films such as the 1978 movie F.I.S.T.
Formation of Red Hot Chili Peppers
Anthony began working with Flea and drummer Jack Irons after being asked to hype up the crowd at local shows. He started as a frontman and rapper, performing an early track titled Out in L.A. At The Rhythm Lounge. This initial performance led to more shows, and the group eventually changed their name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The band gained early notoriety through energetic performances and unconventional stage choices, such as wearing only socks during a show at a Hollywood club. After recording a demo, they secured a record deal with EMI and released their first album, titled The Red Hot Chili Peppers, in 1984.
