Biography
Who is Arne Friedrich?
Early football career
Arne Friedrich began his professional path after being scouted while competing for the Regionalliga club SC Verl. Hermann Gerland, who coached Arminia Bielefeld, observed his performance and recruited him to the team. Arne quickly established himself as a consistent starter in his new environment, proving his value as a reliable defensive player. He demonstrated significant versatility on the field, which allowed him to adapt to various defensive roles, including full-back and centre-back positions.
Playing for Hertha BSC and Wolfsburg
In 2002, Arne moved to Berlin to join Hertha BSC. He enjoyed early success there, winning the DFB-Ligapokal during his first year after victories against Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Schalke 04. Falko Götz appointed him captain for the squad in the 2004–05 period, a leadership position he maintained for the rest of his tenure at the club. Arne participated in 231 matches in the German top-flight for Hertha.
Following the team's relegation in 2010, he transferred to VfL Wolfsburg on a three-year contract for a reported fee of two million euros. His time at Wolfsburg concluded in September 2011 when the club released him due to a long-term injury.
Time in Chicago and retirement
Arne signed with the Major League Soccer team Chicago Fire in March 2012. He made his competitive debut against Houston Dynamo in April of that year. During his stint in the United States, he netted his first league goal against Philadelphia Union in August 2012. The organization recognized his contributions by naming him the club's Defender of the Year for that season.
Arne became a permanent United States resident in early 2013, which helped his team by freeing up an international roster slot. Persistent injury issues kept him sidelined throughout 2013, and he officially retired from professional football in June of that year.
International career and executive roles
His international career included eighty-two appearances for the German senior team. He represented his country in several major tournaments, including Euro 2004, the 2006 World Cup, Euro 2008, and the 2010 World Cup. He famously shut down Cristiano Ronaldo during the Euro 2008 quarter-final match. Arne transitioned into coaching and executive roles after his playing career ended.
He worked as an assistant coach for the Germany U18 team before returning to Hertha BSC. He eventually became the sporting director and served on the executive board for the Berlin club, also holding an interim managing director title for a five-month period.
