Who is Beckii Cruel?
Early life and real name
Rebecca Anne Flint was born in Blackpool, England. Her father worked as a police inspector and her mother was a dance instructor. She has an older brother named Ryan. She spent her early years in the United Kingdom before relocating to the Isle of Man. At age 2, she moved with her family to Ramsey. She attended Ramsey Grammar School. Beckii started taking ballet lessons when she was 4. She discovered anime and manga at age 11 after reading Fruits Basket.
YouTube and Japanese music career
Beckii Cruel started her YouTube channel as xBextahx on July 22, 2007. Her first upload was a dance cover of Hare Hare Yukai. In April 2009, her dance video for the song Danjo became popular in Japan on Nico Nico Douga. This led her to sign with the Life Is So Cruel agency in August 2009. A producer helped her choose the stage name Beckii Cruel. She performed at the Akihabara Entertainment Festival and Animelo Summer Live 2009. She also appeared on the variety show Jinrui Akiramekaketeita Yume on January 6, 2010.
Her music debut came on November 4, 2009, through the compilation albums No, Ballad Matsuri and No, Upper Matsuri. She sang duets with Taro. Her first idol DVD reached number 8 on the Japanese charts. In January 2010, she released the digital single Just Wanna Have Some Fun. She also joined the girl group Cruel Angels and released the song Tsubasa o Kudasai.
Independent music and fashion
In August 2011, Beckii left her agency because of unfair contracts and a lack of interest in living in Japan. She released her first UK single, You Can't Kiss Me, on October 24, 2011. This song reached number 8 on the Music Week Dance Charts. She later performed at the Brighton Japan Festival. She modeled at the 10th Tokyo Girls Collection in March 2010. In May 2012, she and Camille Cora started the Oishii! Project. This included the groups Oishii! Ichigo and Oishii! Mini Cherries. She designed the outfits for these groups.
In August 2013, she released the song Future Fantasy. Beckii then shifted her focus to fashion. She launched her own handmade clothing line called Bcky Couture on April 14, 2014. In May 2015, she collaborated with Jeremy Boydell for the Bcky x SlimGiltSoul line. She worked as a reporter for NHK World Kawaii International in May 2016. She later stopped singing because of anxiety.
Business and marketing ventures
After moving to London, Beckii entered the marketing industry. In December 2016, she became a creator community manager for Social Circle. She represented the company at Summer in the City. In December 2017, she gave evidence to the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications. In March 2019, she co-founded an agency called Pepper Studio. This business focuses on influencer marketing and is located in London.
