Early life and background
Belinda Carlisle was born in Hollywood, California, on August 17, 1958. Her parents were Joanne and Harold Carlisle. She was the first of seven children in her family. When she was five years old, her father left the family, and she grew up in households she described as impoverished. During her youth, she lived in several locations including Simi Valley and Reseda before moving to Burbank. The family eventually settled in Thousand Oaks, California, during her teenage years.
While attending school in Thousand Oaks, she was a cheerleader at Newbury Park High School. Her interest in music began when she was ten years old, with early influences including the Beach Boys and the Animals. She became rebellious as a teenager and eventually left home at the age of 19 to pursue music. Before her professional career began, she held various jobs, including working at a House of Fabrics store and as a clerk for the Hilton Hotels Corporation.
The Go-Go's era
In 1977, she briefly served as the drummer for the punk band the Germs under the name Dottie Danger, though she never performed live with them. Shortly after, she co-founded the band that became the Go-Go's. The group eventually included Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine, Gina Schock, and Jane Wiedlin. They gained significant attention as an all-female group that wrote their own music and played their own instruments.
The band achieved major success with their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, which reached number one on the charts. This record featured popular tracks like We Got the Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed. The group released two additional albums, Vacation and Talk Show, before breaking up in 1985. The band reunited in 1999 and continued to perform together until 2022, with two additional festival appearances in 2025. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
Solo music career

Her second solo album, Heaven on Earth, was released in 1987 and helped her achieve broader international success. The album featured the song Heaven Is a Place on Earth, which topped the singles charts in the United States and the United Kingdom. Other well-known hits from this period included I Get Weak and Circle in the Sand. She continued her success with the 1989 album Runaway Horses, which contained the popular single Leave a Light On.
