Biography
Who is Bhaichung Bhutia?
Early life and background
Bhaichung Bhutia was born in Tinkitam, India, into a Nepali-speaking agricultural family. His parents worked as farmers in Sikkim and initially did not support his athletic interests. After his father passed away during his childhood, his uncle Karma Bhutia encouraged him to pursue his education at St. Xavier's School in Pakyong. At the age of nine, Bhaichung secured a football scholarship from the Sports Authority of India to attend the Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok.
During his school years in Sikkim, he actively participated in multiple sports beyond football, including badminton, athletics, and basketball. He gained local recognition while playing for the Boys Club in Gangtok, which his uncle managed. His breakthrough occurred during the 1992 Subroto Cup, where he earned the Best Player award. This performance caught the attention of former national team goalkeeper Bhaskar Ganguly, who helped facilitate his move to professional football in Calcutta.
Professional club career
In 1993, at sixteen, Bhaichung joined the professional club East Bengal F.C. In Kolkata. He moved to JCT Mills in Phagwara two years later, a team that eventually won the India National Football League during the 1996–97 season. Bhaichung served as the league's top goalscorer that year and received the Indian Player of the Year award. He returned to East Bengal in 1997, where he especially scored a hat-trick during a Federation Cup semi-final victory against Mohun Bagan.
Bhaichung made history in 1999 by signing with the English club Bury F.C. This move made him the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club and only the second to play professionally in Europe. His time in England included a debut against Cardiff City and his first league goal against Chesterfield in 2000. Recurring knee injuries eventually limited his appearances, and he was released after the club entered administration.
Awards and life off the pitch
Throughout his career, Bhaichung received significant recognition for his contributions to the sport. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1999 and the Padma Shri. He also founded the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools in Delhi in 2010 through a partnership with Nike and football figures. Beyond his sporting achievements, he participated in the reality television program Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, which led to a suspension by his then-club, Mohun Bagan.
Bhaichung became the first Indian athlete to boycott the Olympic torch relay to support the Tibetan independence movement. In later years, he transitioned into roles beyond playing, including serving as the president of the Sikkim Football Association. He also contested the presidential election for the All India Football Federation, though he was unsuccessful in that bid.
