Early life and background
Boy George: Born George Alan O'Dowd, the musician arrived on June 14, 1961, at Barnehurst Hospital in Kent. He grew up within a working-class Irish Catholic family residing in Eltham. His father, Jerry O'Dowd, worked as a builder, while his mother was named Dinah O'Dowd. He has four siblings, including three brothers and one sister, as well as an older half-brother from his mother's previous life in Dublin.

He struggled with his academic environment and eventually left school at age 15 after changing his hair color to orange. Before finding success in music, he held various jobs, including working as a model, makeup artist, printer, and fruit picker.
Rise to fame with Culture Club
He became a central figure in the New Romantic movement during the early 1980s. Frequent visits to the London nightclub Blitz helped shape his androgynous fashion style, heavily influenced by David Bowie and Marc Bolan. After a brief period performing with the group Bow Wow Wow using the stage name Lieutenant Lush, he formed his own band.
Alongside musicians Mikey Craig, Roy Hay, and Jon Moss, he established Culture Club in 1981. Their debut studio record, Kissing To Be Clever, arrived in 1982 and achieved big success. The group made history as the first act since the Beatles to secure three top-ten hits in the United States from a single debut album. Their follow-up project, Colour by Numbers, proved even more successful, selling over 10 million copies globally and spawning the major hit Karma Chameleon.
Solo career and other projects
Starting in 1987, he launched a solo musical career that has produced 11 studio albums and dozens of singles. His solo hits include tracks such as The Crying Game and Everything I Own. Between 1989 and 1992, he fronted a project called Jesus Loves You, which released songs like Bow Down Mister. He also began working as a professional disc jockey in the mid-1990s.

He has appeared on television programs such as The A-Team and participated in the 22nd UK series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! In 2022. Also, he was featured on the song Superstar, which represented San Marino in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades for his contributions to music. In 2001, a BBC poll ranked him 46th among the 100 Greatest Britons. Later, in 2015, the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors honored him with an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Services to British Music.
His personal history includes significant hardships. He has spoken openly about his difficult relationship with his father, whom he described as abusive.
