Biography
Who is Brandi Carlile?
Early life in Washington
Brandi Marie Carlile was born on June 1, 1981, in Ravensdale, Washington. This town is situated 30 miles outside of Seattle. During her childhood, she lived in a remote area and spent time playing in the woods with her sister, Tiffany Carlile Hanseroth, and her brother, Jay. When she was just four years old, she contracted bacterial meningitis. The illness was severe, causing her heart to stop multiple times, and she spent time in a coma before recovering. Her family moved between several locations during her early years, including Black Diamond, Maple Valley, Auburn, and West Seattle.
Musical beginnings and education
She began performing country music on stage at the age of eight. During that time, she sang Johnny Cash songs alongside her mother, Teresa Carlile. She started writing her own music at age 15. By the time she was 16, she worked as a backup singer for an impersonator of Elvis Presley. Although she attended Tahoma Senior High School, she eventually left to focus entirely on her music career. She taught herself to play the piano after discovering the music of Elton John and learned the guitar at 17.
Brandi Carlile started her professional path performing in music clubs around Seattle. She collaborated with twin brothers Phil and Tim Hanseroth during these early years. Columbia Records signed her in 2004 after hearing the songs she recorded at home. Her debut, self-titled album arrived in 2005. It featured many of her early home-recorded tracks alongside new studio recordings.
Career breakthroughs and The Highwomen
Following her debut, she toured extensively with the Hanseroth brothers. This trio became the foundation of her band. Her second album, The Story, was produced by T Bone Burnett and released in 2007. It gained significant attention after the title track appeared in television commercials and shows, including Grey's Anatomy. She later released albums such as Give Up the Ghost, Bear Creek, The Firewatcher's Daughter, and By the Way, I Forgive You.
In 2019, she formed an all-female country quartet known as The Highwomen. This group included Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby, and Amanda Shires. They released a self-titled album that same year, which received critical praise. The group won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2021 for their track titled Crowded Table.
Activism and community impact
Beyond her music, she remains active in various humanitarian efforts. Her advocacy work addresses several critical issues, including racial justice and the fight for LGBTQ rights. She has also contributed to COVID-19 relief initiatives and provided support for humanitarian aid programs. Her commitment to these causes remains a consistent part of her professional life alongside her recording and touring schedule.
