Early life and schooling
Bryan Ferry arrived in the world on September 26, 1945, in the town of Washington located in County Durham, United Kingdom. His parents were named Mary Ann and Frederick Charles Ferry. His father worked as a farm labourer and also cared for pit ponies. During his school years, Bryan attended the Washington Grammar-Technical School on Spout Lane, starting there in 1957. As a young boy, he earned pocket money as a paperboy. He used these earnings to purchase magazines about jazz, which helped foster his early interest in music. He also developed a specific talent for whistling during his paper route days, a skill he later incorporated into his recording of the John Lennon song Jealous Guy.
Rise of Roxy Music
In November 1970, Bryan formed the band Roxy Music alongside his art school classmate Graham Simpson. He eventually expanded the lineup to include Brian Eno, who played the synthesizer, and saxophonist Andy Mackay. Other members who joined the group included drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Phil Manzanera. In 1971, he auditioned for the band King Crimson, though the group decided his voice was not the right fit. Despite this, he maintained a friendship with band members Robert Fripp and Peter Sinfield, who helped Roxy Music secure a management deal.

Bryan Ferry launched a solo career in 1973 while still performing with his band. His first solo record, These Foolish Things, focused on cover versions of classic tracks. This approach departed from his work with Roxy Music and influenced many other artists. He followed this with his second solo release, Another Time, Another Place, in 1974. The cover for this album showed him in a white dinner jacket, leading Rolling Stone magazine to label him a dandy. He toured to support these early solo albums, performing at the Royal Albert Hall in 1974 after an initial request was denied due to a concert ban.
