Early life and real name
Cheryl Sarkisian was born in El Centro, California, on May 20, 1946. Her parents were John Sarkisian and Georgia Holt, and her father worked as a truck driver. Her parents divorced when she was ten months old, and she grew up in various states including New York, Texas, and California.
She attended Montclair College Preparatory School and Fresno High School. As a child, she had an unusually low voice and dreamed of becoming famous. She left school at age sixteen to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in entertainment.
How Cher became famous
Cher began her career by dancing in nightclubs along Hollywood's Sunset Strip and working as a backing vocalist for producer Phil Spector. She met Sonny Bono in November 1962, and the two formed a close personal and professional partnership. They married in an unofficial ceremony in Tijuana, Mexico, on October 27, 1964.
The duo became famous in 1965 as Sonny & Cher with their hit single I Got You Babe. They also starred in the CBS television variety show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which drew over thirty million weekly viewers in the 1970s.

Cher launched a successful solo music career alongside her work with Sonny. Her early hits included the singles Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves, Half-Breed, and Dark Lady.
