Who is Chino Moreno?
Early life and background
Chino Moreno: Camillo Wong Moreno was born on June 20, 1973, in Sacramento, California. He grew up as the second of five children in the Oak Park area. His mother is of Mexican and Chinese descent, while his father is Mexican. He attended C. K. McClatchy High School in his hometown.
During his high school years, he met Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter. Together, they formed the musical group that would eventually become Deftones in 1988. Before his career in music began to take off, he worked a day job in the shipping department at Tower Records.
Deftones career
The band spent several years playing club shows and building an audience before signing with Maverick Records. Their debut album, Adrenaline, was released in 1995 and produced by Terry Date. They followed this with the 1997 release Around the Fur, which helped propel them further into the alternative metal scene.
In 2000, the group released White Pony to critical acclaim and commercial success. For the song Elite from this album, the band received the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Over the following decades, the group continued to release numerous albums, including Diamond Eyes in 2010, Koi No Yokan in 2012, and Ohms in 2020.
Side projects and collaborations
Alongside his work with Deftones, Chino has participated in multiple side projects and supergroups. During the production of White Pony, he began working on Team Sleep, which released a self-titled debut album in May 2005. He later formed the group Crosses alongside Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom, releasing a self-titled EP in 2011.
In 2012, he joined former members of the band Isis to create a new project called Palms, releasing an album the following year. He also formed the supergroup Saudade in 2016 and has made numerous guest appearances on songs for other musical groups throughout his career.
Personal life and family
Chino has a son named Jakobe Moreno. Throughout his musical career, his distinctive vocal style has included dramatic tenor singing and intense screams. In 2001, he experienced a throat injury involving vocal cord inflammation and partial paralysis, requiring temporary adjustments to his performance duties during a tour.
His musical influences span a diverse range of genres and artists, including Bad Brains, the Cure, Prince, and the Smiths. In 2016, he participated in a unique public concert inside the magma chamber of a volcano at Thrihnukagigur for the Secret Solstice music festival.
