Who is Corey Taylor?
Early life and background
Corey Taylor was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on December 8, 1973. He grew up moving frequently across different states with his mother and sister in search of job opportunities. By age 15, he had already lived in 25 different states. His upbringing included difficult periods, such as struggling with drug addiction and surviving a suicide attempt as a teenager. After this, he moved to live with his grandmother in Des Moines, whom he later credited as his primary source of stability and influence.
Formation of Stone Sour
Corey co-founded the rock band Stone Sour in 1992 alongside drummer Joel Ekman in the Des Moines area. The group recorded several demos throughout the 1990s. In 1997, Corey left the band to join Slipknot while Stone Sour was in the middle of recording sessions. He eventually returned to the group five years later to record their self-titled debut album, which was released in 2002 and reached number 46 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Rise with Slipknot
Corey joined Slipknot in late 1997 after being approached by members Joey Jordison, Shawn Crahan, and Mick Thomson. He replaced the band's original singer, Anders Colsefni. Within the band's numbering system, he is known as Number Eight. His first performance with the group occurred in August 1997. He recorded the band's debut studio album, Slipknot, at Indigo Ranch in Malibu, California. This record achieved double platinum status in the United States and reached number one on the Top Heatseekers chart.
Solo work and personal life
Beyond his band projects, Corey has pursued a solo career. He released his debut solo studio album, titled CMFT, in 2020. This was followed by his second solo effort, CMF2, in 2023. His career also includes acting and writing. In 2017, he publicly shared details about experiencing sexual abuse at age 10, an event he had kept secret for many years due to threats made against him and his mother. He has one child named Griffin Taylor.
