Biography
Who is Damian Marley?
Early life and family background
Damian Robert Nesta Marley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on July 21, 1978. He is the youngest son of famous reggae musician Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, a jazz singer and former Miss World. His parents came from different backgrounds, which later inspired his musical themes. His father gave him the nickname Junior Gong, which was derived from Bob Marley's own moniker Tuff Gong.
When Damian was two years old, his father passed away. Growing up, he developed an interest in music early on. At the age of 13, he formed a musical group called the Shepherds, performing at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in 1992 before the band eventually disbanded in the early nineties.
Rise to fame and solo career
Following the end of his early group, Damian Marley launched his solo career with backing from his father's record label, Tuff Gong. He released his debut studio album, Mr. Marley, in 1996. The release surprised many listeners because he performed as a deejay rather than a traditional singer.
His second album, Halfway Tree, was released on September 11, 2001, and won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2002. The album title reflected his upbringing between the wealthy and impoverished parts of his hometown. He co-produced the project alongside his brother Stephen Marley.
Welcome to Jamrock and Grammy success
Damian Marley released his third studio album, Welcome to Jamrock, in September 2005. The title track addressed poverty, politics, and crime in Jamaica, sparking public debate while earning critical acclaim. The single reached number 55 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 13 on the UK Singles Chart.
At the 2006 Grammy Awards, he won Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for the project. He remains the only Jamaican reggae artist to win two Grammy Awards on the same night and the only reggae artist to win in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category.
Collaborative projects and later work
In May 2010, Damian released Distant Relatives, a collaborative album with rapper Nas. The project focused on their shared African ancestry, with proceeds dedicated to building schools in the Congo. The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart and topped several Billboard genre charts.
He later joined the supergroup SuperHeavy alongside Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, and A. R. Rahman, releasing a self-titled album in 2011. In July 2017, he released his fourth solo studio album, Stony Hill, which subsequently won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
