Who is Dave Grohl?
Early life and background
David Eric Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio, on January 14, 1969. His mother, Virginia Jean, worked as a teacher, and his father, James Harper Grohl, was a news writer. He grew up with a sister named Lisa. When Dave Grohl was a child, his family relocated to Springfield, Virginia. His parents divorced when he was seven years old, and his mother raised him afterward.
As a teenager, Dave developed a strong interest in punk rock music. He attended several high schools in the area, including Thomas Jefferson High School, Bishop Ireton High School, and Annandale High School. While studying, he played in various local bands and taught himself how to play the guitar and drums.
Scream and Nirvana years
Dave began his professional music career by joining the punk rock band Scream at age 17 as their drummer. He toured extensively with the group until they broke up in 1990. Following this, he joined the grunge band Nirvana as their drummer, appearing on their second album, Nevermind, released in 1991. The album became a big commercial success worldwide.
After the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994, Nirvana disbanded. During his time with Nirvana, Dave contributed songwriting ideas and recorded his own material under the name Late! On a cassette titled Pocketwatch.
Foo Fighters and later career
Following the end of Nirvana, Dave formed the rock band Foo Fighters as a one-man project and released their debut album in 1995. He then assembled a full band to tour and record, releasing 12 studio albums over the years. He also played drums for the rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and collaborated with Queens of the Stone Age and Tenacious D.
In addition to music, Dave began directing music videos and later released documentaries including Sound City, Sonic Highways, and What Drives Us. He published an autobiography titled The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music and starred in the comedy horror film Studio 666.
Awards and recognition
Dave has earned widespread recognition for his work in the music industry. In 2016, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him as the 27th-best drummer of all time. He also received inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a member of Nirvana in 2014 and later as a member of Foo Fighters in 2021.
