Twisted Sister and rise to fame
In early 1976, Dee joined Twisted Sister and quickly established himself as the sole songwriter for the group. He developed melodies and lyrics largely on his own while his bandmates socialized, bringing finished ideas to the rest of the group. To stand out visually, he adopted a distinctive persona featuring long blond curly hair, heavy makeup, and bright red lipstick.
The band released their debut studio album, Under the Blade, in September 1982. Their third album, Stay Hungry, arrived in May 1984 and became their most commercially successful record. It featured the hit singles We Are Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock, which helped propel the group to international fame.

He testified against proposed warning labels and industry censorship alongside other prominent musicians. His public clashes with figures like Tipper Gore drew widespread media attention during this period.
Following his initial departure from Twisted Sister in October 1987, Dee formed new musical projects including the band Desperado with former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr. He also released several solo albums and contributed to film soundtracks, such as writing a track for his horror film Strangeland.
