Early life
Denis Cheryshev was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, on December 26, 1990. He grew up in Spain where his father, Dmitri Cheryshev, was playing football professionally at the time. Denis started his youth career at Sporting de Gijon before moving to Burgos Promesas at the age of nine.
During his youth development in Spain, he also represented the Castile and Leon regional team. He eventually joined the youth academy of Real Madrid in 2002, completing his formative years within their system and playing for their reserve squad.
Club career
Denis made his official debut for the Real Madrid first team in 2012 against Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey, becoming the first Russian player to feature for the club. Over the following years, he experienced several loan spells and permanent transfers with clubs in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus.
He played for teams including Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia, Venezia, Panionios, and Krasava Ypsonas. During his time at Real Madrid, he was part of the squad that won the UEFA Champions League during the 2015-16 season. He also won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in the 2018-19 season before retiring from professional football.
International career
Eligible to represent both Spain and Russia due to dual nationality, Denis chose to play internationally for Russia. He made his senior debut for the national team in November 2012 during a friendly match against the United States.
His most well-known international performance came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosted in Russia. He scored four goals during the tournament, helping his team reach the quarter-finals and earning a spot on the FIFA World Cup Fantasy Team. He also represented his country at UEFA Euro 2020 before concluding his international career.
