Biography
Who is Edinson Cavani?
Early life and career beginnings
Edinson Cavani was born in Salto, Uruguay, on February 14, 1987. He developed his football abilities in South America before moving to Europe to play professionally. His early development took place at Danubio in Montevideo, where he spent two years before Italian club Palermo signed him in 2007 following his performances at the South American Youth Championship.
During his time with Palermo, Edinson established himself in Italian football. He formed a strong partnership with Fabrizio Miccoli and earned the nickname El Matador due to his composure in front of goal. His impressive performances in Serie A drew the attention of larger clubs, leading to his transfer to Napoli in 2010.
Success with Napoli
Edinson joined Napoli in July 2010 on an initial loan deal before the club bought him permanently. He immediately made an impact by scoring crucial goals in Serie A and the UEFA Europa League. His partnership with Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik became known as The Three Tenors among Italian sports media.
During the 2011 to 2012 season, Edinson helped Napoli win the Coppa Italia by scoring a penalty in the final against Juventus. He finished the 2012 to 2013 season as the top scorer in Serie A, netting 29 league goals. This productive spell established him as one of the leading strikers in European football.
Paris Saint-Germain and later career
In mid-2013, Edinson moved to French club Paris Saint-Germain for a large transfer fee, becoming one of the most expensive signings in French football history at the time. Despite often playing on the wing due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he scored many decisive goals in domestic cup finals and league matches.
After Ibrahimovic left the club, Edinson returned to his preferred centre-forward role and won the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award for the 2016 to 2017 season. He eventually became the club's all-time top goalscorer and collected six Ligue 1 titles. Later in his career, Edinson signed with Manchester United in 2020, moved to Valencia in 2022, and joined Argentine club Boca Juniors the following year.
International career
Edinson made his debut for the Uruguay national team in 2008, scoring against Colombia. He went on to earn 136 caps and score 58 international goals for his country, placing him just behind strike partner Luis Suarez among Uruguayan internationals.
He represented Uruguay in ten major international tournaments, including four FIFA World Cups and five Copas America. Edinson helped his country finish fourth at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was part of the squad that won the Copa America title in 2011.
