Early Life
Edwige Fenech was born in Annaba, France, on December 24, 1948. She grew up with an Algerian-Maltese father and an Italian mother. Following the divorce of her parents during her childhood, she moved to Nice where her mother raised her.
During her youth in Nice, she developed an interest in the arts before launching her professional career in the film industry.
Acting Career
Edwige Fenech relocated to Rome in 1967 to appear in her first Italian film titled Samoa, Queen of the Jungle. The following year, she signed a contract with Austrian director Franz Antel and appeared in several of his motion pictures as well as works by Franz Marischka.
Her greatest commercial success arrived through commedia sexy all'italiana films, including Ubalda, All Naked and Warm and Giovannona Long-Thigh. She often portrayed stereotypical professions in these comedies and frequently partnered with actors like Carlo Giuffrè and Renzo Montagnani.
She also built a strong reputation as a regular performer in giallo films. Her thriller credits include titles such as Five Dolls for an August Moon, The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, and All the Colors of the Dark.
Later Work
During the 1980s, Edwige Fenech transitioned into television work by appearing alongside Barbara Bouchet on an Italian chat show. After years of acting, she expanded her career into film production and co-produced The Merchant of Venice alongside Al Pacino.
Her production background and enduring status in cinema led to further industry recognition. She accepted an offer from Eli Roth to appear in Hostel Part II, while director Quentin Tarantino named a character after her in Inglourious Basterds.
Personal Life
Edwige Fenech was married to Italian film producer Luciano Martino during the 1970s. In the mid-1990s, she was engaged to Italian industrialist Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.
She has a son named Edwin who has worked within her production company. Throughout her life and career, she has maintained a personal identification as Roman Catholic.
