Early life and heritage
Elisa Sednaoui was born in Savigliano, Italy. She spent her early life living across three different countries, including Italy, France, and Egypt. Specifically, she lived in areas like Luxor and Zamalek in Cairo. Her parents are Anna Morra and Olivier Sednaoui. Her mother has Italian and Syrian heritage, while her father has Egyptian, Syrian, and French roots.
The family name originates from the city of Sednaya. They are a Melkite Greek Catholic family of Syrian descent. In the late 19th century, the family migrated to Egypt and established successful department stores in Cairo. This multicultural background influenced her upbringing and later professional path in the arts and social sectors.
Acting and film career
Elisa began her professional career as a model before moving into acting and film directing. Her first feature film was the 2010 production Eastern Drift, directed by Šarūnas Bartas. She played the lead role of Gabriella, and the film premiered at the International Forum of New Cinema during the 2010 Berlinale. That same year, she appeared in the French film Bus Palladium, directed by Christopher Thompson.
Her film credits also include the short film La Baie du Renard, which closed Critics Week at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. She starred alongside Pierre Torreton in that project. Also, she appeared in Karl Lagerfeld’s short film Remember Now, which served as an introduction to the 2010 Chanel Cruise Collection. A pilot music workshop took place in Luxor in 2014, where local youth wrote and recorded a song. The organization has since expanded to operate in the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States, supporting thousands of beneficiaries through partnerships with entities like Save the Children.
She also established Funtasia Enterprise in 2020. This California-based Benefit corporation offers educational services, workshops, and teacher training. The enterprise developed a proprietary educational approach focused on socio-emotional learning and soft skills. This method has been researched and tested in multiple countries. Funtasia Enterprise collaborates with various institutions, including the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies and the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale in Saudi Arabia.
