Who is Émily Bégin?
Early life and education
Émily Bégin was born in Saint-Jérôme, Canada. She pursued professional training in the performing arts to develop her skills as a dancer and entertainer.
She earned a dance degree from Cégep Montmorency. For musical theater training, she attended Lionel Groulx College and participated in several workshops at the Fichaud Danielle school.
Star Académie and stage career
The singer became well known as a contestant during the inaugural season of Star Académie. In 2003, she traveled throughout Quebec as part of the Star Académie grand tour.
Her stage work includes playing Frenchy in more than 100 performances of Cabaret in 2004. She continued on the Quebec tour in 2005 and later performed in the musical NINE as Carla in early 2007.
Émily took on the role of Helena in the musical Sweet Charity in 2008. In 2009, she played Chava in Fiddler on the Roof and participated in a traveling tour during the summer of 2010. She has also worked on various projects under the direction of Denise Filiatrault.
Music career and albums
The artist released her debut album, titled Légende Urbaine, in November 2005. This project featured an urban dance hall style. The title track and the song Mata Hari were released as singles. The song Légende Urbaine remained in the Top 10 Network Power for six weeks, and several music videos received heavy rotation.
Another well-known hit from this debut era was the song Ou Sont les Femmes. Following this success, she released a self-titled second album, Émily, in 2007. For this record, she helped with the writing and the overall style, focusing on 1980s musical textures.
The first single from the 2007 album was Laissez-moi danser, which was originally a song by Dalida. This track was the first to be released as a music video. Subsequent singles from the album included Adrénaline and Au Grand Jour. The song Au Grand Jour became well known for its provocative themes regarding same-sex sexuality.
