Early life and real name
Enrique Miguel Iglesias Preysler was born in Madrid, Spain, on May 8, 1975. He is the youngest child of singer Julio Iglesias and socialite Isabel Preysler. As a child, he moved to Miami, Florida, to live with his father after his grandfather was kidnapped by the Basque group ETA in 1981.
He attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami and later enrolled at the University of Miami to study business. However, he dropped out after one year to pursue his passion for recording music without using his famous family name to gain an advantage.
How Enrique became famous
Enrique recorded a demo tape in secret using borrowed money from his family nanny and adopted the stage name Enrique Martínez to hide his identity. The Mexican record label Fonovisa eventually signed him and released his debut Spanish album titled Enrique Iglesias in November 1995.
The debut record sold half a million copies in its first week and eventually went Platinum in the United States. Hit singles like Si Tú Te Vas and Experiencia Religiosa topped several Billboard Latin music charts and earned him a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
Career highlights
In 1999, Enrique made a successful crossover into the English-language pop market after recording the song Bailamos for the film Wild Wild West soundtrack. The track became an international hit and reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
He signed a major record deal with Interscope Records and released successful English albums including Enrique, Escape, and Insomniac. Over his career, he has achieved numerous number-one songs on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs and Dance charts, earning the title King of Latin Pop.
