Who is Eric Dier?
Early life and family background
Eric Dier Jeremy Edgar Dier was born in Cheltenham, United Kingdom, on January 15, 1994, to parents Jeremy and Louise. His father worked as a professional tennis player, while his grandfather Ted Croker and great-uncle Peter Croker both played football professionally for Charlton Athletic. His grandfather also served as a secretary for The Football Association.
When Eric was seven years old, his family relocated from England to Portugal. They initially lived in Lagos within the Algarve region before moving to Lisbon. During this time, his mother secured a position managing the hospitality programme for UEFA Euro 2004.
Club career beginnings
While attending the International Preparatory School in Lisbon, Eric caught the attention of his physical education teacher, who arranged a trial with Sporting CP at the age of eight. He successfully joined the club's youth academy and later signed professional terms in April 2010. During his development, he spent time on loan with Everton in England, where he won the U18 Premier League title with their youth team.
Eric eventually made his senior breakthrough in Portugal, recording his debut for Sporting B in August 2012 against Atlético. He scored his first senior goal later that year with a direct free kick against Benfica B before earning a promotion to Sporting CP's primary squad.
Tottenham Hotspur and international career
In August 2014, Eric returned to English football by signing a five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur. Despite eligibility for Portugal, Eric chose to represent the England national team internationally. He made his senior debut in November 2015 and was subsequently selected for UEFA Euro 2016 as well as the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups.
Bayern Munich and Monaco
Following his departure from Tottenham, Eric joined German club Bayern Munich on an initial loan in January 2024 before making the transfer permanent. He helped the team win the Bundesliga championship during the 2024 to 2025 season under coach Thomas Tuchel.
In May 2025, Eric moved to French club Monaco on a free transfer, signing a three-year deal. He quickly established himself in the squad by scoring on his debut against Le Havre and participating in the UEFA Champions League.
