Biography
Who is Erykah Badu?
Early life and education
Erykah Badu was born in Dallas, Texas, where she grew up alongside her mother, the actress Kolleen Wright, and her two siblings. From a young age, she was immersed in the arts, singing and dancing with her mother and performing at the Dallas Theater Center. Her early training included working with her godmother, Gwen Hargrove, and her uncle, Curtis King, who founded The Black Academy of Arts and Letters.
As a teenager, she showed her freestyling abilities on a local radio station while performing alongside artists such as Roy Hargrove. She attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before enrolling at Grambling State University. She studied theater at the university but chose to leave in 1993 to fully commit to her music career. It was during her youth that she decided to change her name from Erica to Erykah, believing the original spelling represented a slave name, while adopting Badu because it was her favorite jazz scat sound.
