Early life and real name
Fabien Alain Barthez was born on June 28, 1971, in Lavelanet, France. His father, Alain Barthez, was a former player for RCNM. During his youth, Fabien held a rugby license and played the sport until he reached adolescence.
He later transitioned to football and was brought into the Toulouse FC pre-academy in 1986 by Élie Baup. After two successful seasons, he joined the football academy directed by Serge Delmas and eventually made his Division 1 debut for Toulouse on September 21, 1991, against Nancy.
Club career highlights
After joining Marseille in 1992, Fabien Barthez won both the French league and the UEFA Champions League in his first season at the club. He kept a clean sheet in the final against Milan, making him the youngest goalkeeper to win a Champions League title at the time.
He later moved to Monaco, winning Ligue 1 titles in 1997 and 2000. In 2000, he transferred to Manchester United for 7.8 million pounds to replace Peter Schmeichel. During his time in England, he won Premier League titles and became known for his eccentric behavior, spectacular saves, and occasional high-profile errors.
Following his spell at Manchester United, he returned to Marseille, and later played for Nantes before retiring from football in 2007. In 2008, he started a new career in motorsport as a racing automobile driver.
International career
Fabien Barthez represented the France national team in multiple international tournaments. He won the 1998 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2000, and the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup with his country.
He represented his nation at three editions of both the FIFA World Cup and the European Championship. He also reached the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup before retiring from international football.
He holds well-known records for France, including being the most capped player in the World Cup with 17 appearances at the finals. He also shares the record for the most World Cup clean sheets with Peter Shilton, having kept ten clean sheets.
