Who is Faye Wong?
Early life in Beijing
Faye Wong was born in Beijing, China, at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Her father, Wang Youlin, worked as a mining engineer, while her mother, Xia Guiying, was a revolutionary music soprano with the China Coal Mine Art Troupe. She grew up in the Qingniangou area near Andingmen within communities linked to the coal mining industry.
During her youth, she attended Ditan Primary School where she acted as the arts and cultural coordinator for her class. She later went on to study at Beijing Dongzhimen Middle School. Although she was admitted to Xiamen University in 1987 to study biology, she eventually decided to relocate to Hong Kong to join her father.
Music career and rise to fame
Faye began her musical path as a student by releasing six cover albums on cassette between 1985 and 1987. These recordings often featured songs by Teresa Teng. After moving to Hong Kong, she placed third in an Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union singing contest, which led to her signing with Cinepoly Records in 1988. During this period, she used the stage name Shirley Wong.
Her debut album, also titled Shirley Wong, was released in 1989 and sold 25,000 copies. She achieved significant success in 1992 with the Cantopop song Fragile Woman, which was featured in the TVB drama The Greed of Man. This hit helped her build a big following across Southeast Asia, Japan, and the Chinese-speaking world. She eventually transitioned to recording primarily in Mandarin from the late 1990s onwards.
Acting and personal life
Beyond her music, Faye Wong has gained international recognition for her film work. She starred in well-known movies directed by Wong Kar-wai, including Chungking Express in 1994 and 2046 in 2004. Her career has seen her move through various genres, including trip hop, and she has earned awards from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and the Stockholm International Film Festival.
In her personal life, she has been married to Dou Wei and Li Yapeng. She has two children, Leah Dou and Li Yan. She has also been linked to partner Nicholas Tse. After her second marriage in 2005, she moved back to Beijing and stepped away from the public eye, though she has occasionally returned to performing on stage.
