Biography
Who is Gary Numan?
Early life and education
Gary Numan Anthony James Webb was born on March 8, 1958, in Hammersmith, West London. His father worked as a British Airways bus driver based at Heathrow Airport. When he was seven years old, his family adopted his cousin John, who later became a musician and played in Gary's backing band. As a teenager, Gary joined the Air Training Corps and briefly held various jobs including Heathrow Airport bus driver, forklift truck driver, air conditioning ventilator fitter, and accounts clerk.
His education took him through several schools in England. He attended Town Farm Junior School in Stanwell, Surrey; Ashford County Grammar School; Slough Grammar School; Upton Court Grammar School; Spelthorne College; and Brooklands Technical College in Weybridge, Surrey. At age 15, his father bought him a Gibson Les Paul guitar, which became his most treasured possession. He played in various bands and searched through advertisements in Melody Maker to find musicians to join.
How Gary became famous
Gary came to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and record producer for the new wave band Tubeway Army. After signing a recording contract with Beggars Banquet Records, the group released music exploring dystopian science fiction and synthesizers. During recording sessions, Gary discovered a Moog synthesizer left behind in the studio, which sparked his transition towards an electronic music sound.
The breakthrough came in 1979 when Tubeway Army released the single Are Friends Electric, which climbed to No. 1 on the UK singles chart. The parent studio album Replicas also reached No. 1 on the UK albums chart. Following this success, Gary dropped the band name and released his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle later in 1979 under his own stage name.
Career highlights and albums
The solo album The Pleasure Principle featured no guitars, using synthesizers connected to effects units to achieve a distorted, phased, metallic tone. The single Cars became a major international hit, reaching No. 1 in the UK and Canada, and charting well in the United States in 1980. Gary followed these successes by topping the UK Albums Chart for a third time with his 1980 studio album Telekon.
Throughout his career, Gary experimented with various musical styles including jazz, funk, and electronic rock. He released albums such as Dance, I, Assassin, and Warriors through the early 1980s. In 2017, he received the Inspiration Award at the Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. He also made his debut performance at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2025.
