Biography
Who is Gerard Piqué?
Early life and career start
Gerard Piqué Bernabeu began his path in the sport at La Masia, the famous youth academy of FC Barcelona. He operated as a defensive midfielder during his early years in the youth setup. Before signing a professional deal with the Catalan club, he moved to England to join Manchester United in 2004.
The Premier League team did not pay a transfer fee because he was too young to hold a professional contract at that time. He made his debut for the senior Manchester United squad in October 2004 during a League Cup match against Crewe Alexandra. He gained valuable experience in England, including a loan spell at Real Zaragoza in Spain during the 2006–2007 season. While at Zaragoza, he played in 22 first-team matches, which helped him transition into a reliable centre-back. He eventually returned to Old Trafford for the 2007–2008 season, where he gained exposure in the UEFA Champions League.
Success at Barcelona
In May 2008, he signed a four-year contract to return to his boyhood club, FC Barcelona. This move proved to be a defining moment in his career. During his time at the club, he helped the team secure major titles, including nine La Liga trophies and three UEFA Champions League titles.
He played a significant role in the 2008–2009 and 2014–2015 seasons, where the team achieved historic trebles. Throughout his tenure, he played 616 competitive matches for the club. He scored crucial goals, including one in a 6–2 victory against Real Madrid in 2009. His leadership on the pitch was evident when he captained the squad in various matches, such as a 2010 game against Rubin Kazan. By the time he signed a contract extension in 2020, his buy-out clause was set at 500 million euros.
International football achievements
On the international stage, he represented the Spain men's national football team with distinction. He earned his first cap on February 11, 2009. He was a central figure in the Spanish squad that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Two years later, he contributed to the team's success at UEFA Euro 2012.
Before reaching the senior level, he was a member of the Spain under-19 squad that won the 2006 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Poland. He also competed in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he started all six matches for his country. He concluded his international playing career following the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Following his playing days, he shifted focus to business ventures, including the founding of the Kings League in 2022. This sports competition operates in Spain and several other regions. He has two children, Milan Piqué and Sasha Piqué Mebarak. His family background includes his mother, Montserrat Bernabeu i Guitart.
