Biography
Who is Gerardo Martino?
Early life and playing career
Gerardo Martino was born in Valparaíso, Argentina. He began his professional football career in 1980 and played until 1996, primarily serving as an attacking midfielder. He is most closely associated with Newell's Old Boys in Rosario, where he played a total of 505 official matches. This record makes him the player with the most appearances in the history of that club.
During his time with Newell's Old Boys, he helped the team win three Argentine Primera América titles. These victories occurred during the 1987–88, 1990–91, and 1992 Clausura seasons. A fan vote eventually named him the greatest player in the history of the club. He also represented the Argentina national youth team, making his debut in a 1981 friendly against Chile.
International football career
Gerardo's experience on the international stage included playing for the Argentina senior squad. He received his first call-up from coach Alfio Basile in February 1991 for a match against Hungary. In that game, he entered the match during the second half as Argentina won 2–0. He also participated in the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship as part of the U20 national team.
Beyond Argentina, he played briefly in Europe for CD Tenerife in Spain. He made 15 appearances and scored one goal for the club in 1991. Before his retirement from professional play in 1996, he also spent time with O'Higgins in Chile and Barcelona SC in Ecuador. These stints marked the conclusion of his career as an active player.
