Early life and background
Huma Qureshi was born on July 28, 1986, in Delhi, India, into a Muslim family. Her father, Saleem Qureshi, operates a chain of ten restaurants named Saleem's, while her mother, Ameena Qureshi, is a housewife. She grew up alongside three brothers, including fellow actor Saqib Saleem, in New Delhi before the family relocated to Kalkaji in South Delhi.
Huma completed her education at the Gargi College, which is part of the University of Delhi, where she earned a bachelor's degree in history with honours. During her college years, she began working as a theatre actor and model, joining the Act 1 theatre group under the mentorship of N. K Sharma.
How Huma became famous
In 2008, Huma moved to Mumbai to audition for film roles, initially pursuing an unmade project titled Junction. She subsequently signed a two-year contract with Hindustan Unilever to appear in various television commercials. Through her work promoting products alongside prominent figures, she caught the attention of director Anurag Kashyap during a Samsung mobile commercial shoot.
Kashyap offered her a three-film deal with his production company, leading to her feature film debut in the two-part crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012. Her performance as Mohsina earned widespread critical acclaim and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, instantly establishing her presence in the Indian film industry.
