Early life in Budapest
Born Anna Ilona Staller in Budapest, Hungary, she grew up during the era of the Hungarian People's Republic. Her father left the household when she was just three years old. She was primarily raised by her mother, who worked as a midwife, and her stepfather, an official within the Hungarian Ministry of the Interior.
By the time she was twelve, Ilona began working as a model for the Hungarian news agency Magyar Távirati Iroda. During her late teenage years, she worked as a maid at a luxury hotel in Budapest. In later interviews, she claimed that she provided information to Hungarian authorities regarding American diplomats staying at that establishment.
Rise to fame and career
In the early 1970s, after moving to Italy, she met pornographer Riccardo Schicchi. She gained initial public attention through her radio show Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? Broadcast on Radio Luna. It was for this program that she adopted the stage name Cicciolina. She soon appeared in various films, making her debut in the 1975 production La liceale. In 1978, she famously became the first person to bare her breasts on live Italian television during the program C'era due Volte.
Throughout the 1980s, she continued her career in the adult film industry. Her first hardcore movie was the 1983 production Telefono rosso. In 1987, she released her memoirs, titled Confessioni erotiche di Cicciolina. She also appeared in the 1987 film Carne bollente, which co-starred John Holmes. Later in her career, she appeared in the 1994 science fiction film Replikator and took a role in the Brazilian soap opera Xica da Silva in 1996. In 2008, she appeared as a contestant on the Argentine version of Strictly Come Dancing.
Political activities
Ilona Staller entered the political arena in 1979 as a candidate for the Lista del Sole, which was Italy's first Green party. By 1985, she aligned herself with the Radical Party, focusing her platform on libertarian issues, human rights, and opposition to nuclear energy. She successfully secured a seat in the Italian Parliament in 1987, receiving roughly 20,000 votes.
While serving in parliament, she became known for unconventional diplomacy. She offered to engage in sexual relations with leaders such as Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden in exchange for peace. In 1991, she helped found the Love Party alongside Moana Pozzi. In later years, she attempted to run for office in Budapest and various Italian municipalities, including Monza and Milan, though these campaigns were generally unsuccessful. In 2012, she established the Democracy, Nature, Love party, which advocated for same-sex marriage and minimum wage improvements.
Personal life and relationships
She married American artist Jeff Koons in 1991. The couple collaborated on a series of sculptures and photographs titled Made in Heaven, which were displayed at the 1990 Venice Biennale. They had a son in 1992, but their relationship ended shortly after. Their marriage concluded in 1994 amidst legal disputes regarding child custody.
Ilona is also an accomplished chess player, a skill she learned from her father during her childhood. In 2024, she reported her son to the police regarding allegations of drug abuse. She continues to be a public figure, appearing in fashion campaigns and maintaining her presence in Italian media.
