Who is J. P. Calderon?
Early life and education
J. P. Calderon was born in Santa Monica, California. He grew up in Marina del Rey. His parents were Edwin and Xinia. He has an older brother named Peter. He is of Costa Rican descent and grew up in a Roman Catholic home. His mother died from breast cancer when he was nine years old.
J. Attended St. Bernard’s Catholic High School. He spent two years at Santa Monica City College. Later, he went to California State University, Long Beach. He played for the school's men's volleyball team. He earned a degree in speech communication in 2000.
Volleyball career
J. Began his professional volleyball career in 2004. He became a ranked player within the Association of Volleyball Professionals. In 1998, he turned down a professional offer in Barcelona, Spain to finish his college degree.
J. P. Calderon worked as an assistant coach for the Long Beach State University women's team for five years. He spent three years as a volunteer and two years as a paid employee. He learned the differences between the styles of men's and women's volleyball during this time. He also coached for the Junior Olympics and the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club.
Survivor and reality television
J. Appeared on Survivor: Cook Islands in 2006. This was the 13th season of a CBS show. He started as a member of the Aitutaki tribe. He later joined the Rarotonga tribe after the merge on day eight. He was the fourth person voted off the show in a 7-2 vote.
He felt he treated the experience like a sports competition. He believed this approach hindered his ability to build social alliances. He later appeared in the 2011 Logo TV series A-List; Los Angeles.
Modeling career
He joined The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency in 2007 during a casting call in season two. He attended an open casting call in the first episode of the second season. He noted that the agency required models to be naked or in underwear often.
J. P. Calderon appeared on the February 2007 issue of Instinct magazine. He became the first male to appear on that cover two times. In 2009, he modeled for the French magazine Têtu. He led the agency's men's section in New York City. He is also signed with the KULT Model Agency in Germany. In 2012, he modeled for the NOH8 Campaign against California Proposition 8.
Personal life and relationships
J. Came out as gay during his 2007 Instinct magazine feature. He had worked as a bartender in a gay bar previously. In October 2013, he got engaged to Julz Heaney in Hawaii. Heaney works as a real estate agent. The couple has been together since 2007. His father died in 2005.
