Who is James Bay?
Early life
James Bay Michael Bay was born in Hitchin, United Kingdom, to Jill and Nick Bay. He grew up alongside his older brother Alex and attended Hitchin Boys' School during his youth. At the age of eleven, he found an old five-string guitar in his house and was inspired to learn classical music after hearing Eric Clapton play Layla. As a supporter of Newcastle United F.C., he spent much of his youth in Hertfordshire before moving forward with his education.
Career and albums
James released his debut extended play titled The Dark of the Morning in July 2013, followed by his second EP, Let It Go, in 2014. The lead single Let It Go peaked at number ten on the UK charts and helped him secure a growing fan base. He later started on a UK headline tour and performed live on the Burberry runway while recording a session for Burberry Acoustic. In 2014, he also toured across North America alongside Hozier.
Awards and recognition
Throughout his career, James has received numerous accolades from the music industry. In February 2015, he received the Brit Awards Critics Choice award in London. At the 2016 Brit Awards ceremony, he was named Best British Male Solo Artist. During the same event, he performed a live duet of Love Yourself alongside Justin Bieber.
Personal life
James has been in a long-term relationship with music promoter Lucy Smith, whom he began dating when he was sixteen years old. The couple got married during a private ceremony in August 2022. They welcomed a daughter named Ada Violet Bay, who was born in October 2021.
