Who is Jay Chou?
Early life and education
Jay Chou was born in the Linkou District of Taiwan. His parents were both educators, with his mother working as an art teacher and his father working as a biomedical researcher. When he was four years old, his mother began arranging piano lessons for him.
During his youth, he spent time learning the cello and studying music theory. He attended Tamkang Senior High School, where he focused on piano and minored in cello. He eventually found work as a waiter after being exempted from military service due to a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis.
How Jay became famous
His entry into the music industry began after a friend entered him into the Super New Talent King show in 1998. Although he did not win, the host Jacky Wu noticed the complexity of his musical compositions. This led to a contract with Alfa Music as a composer.
He released his debut studio album, titled Jay, in November 2000. This project included the hit song Starry Mood and showed his skills in arrangement and production. By 2001, his second album, Fantasy, helped establish him as a major star in the music industry.
Music and career highlights
Jay Chou has released several successful albums, including Yeh Hui-Mei and Common Jasmine Orange. His work often blends R&B, hip-hop, and rock with traditional Chinese musical elements. He has sold more than 30 million albums to fans around the world.

Beyond his musical achievements, he has appeared in several films. His acting debut was in the movie Initial D in 2005. Other film roles include appearances in Curse of the Golden Flower, Kung Fu Dunk, and the Hollywood productions The Green Hornet and Now You See Me 2.
He is also recognized as a businessman. His various musical tours have been highly successful, with the Opus Jay World Tour generating over US$250 million in revenue. His Invincible World Tour also drew a big audience of more than 3 million people.
