Who is Jay Sean?
Early life and education
Born Kamaljit Singh Jhooti in the London Borough of Hounslow, he grew up in Southall. During his youth, he showed interest in music. At age 11, he started a hip-hop group called Compulsive Disorder with his cousin, Pritpal Rupra. He used the name MC Nicky J at that time. He attended the Latymer Upper School until 1997.
He achieved high marks in his exams, specifically straight A grades in his GCSEs. He earned an A in Biology and Bs in Mathematics and Chemistry for his A Levels. After finishing school, he attended Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. He studied medicine until 2003, when he left his studies to focus on his music career.
Musical beginnings and the Rishi Rich Project
He adopted the name Jay Sean for his professional music work. The name combines his nickname Jay and a version of Shaan, which his grandmother used. In 2003, he joined the Rishi Rich Project after his song One Minute reached producer Rishi Rich. This group included Juggy D and Rishi Rich.
They released the song Dance with You, which reached number 12 on the UK singles chart. This success led to a deal with Virgin Records. He became a pioneer of Bhangra and R&B fusion music. This style helped him reach audiences across the world.
Solo career and Virgin Records
His debut album, Me Against Myself, came out in 2004. This collection included tracks such as Eyes on You and Stolen. Both songs reached the top 10 on the UK singles chart. While the album had moderate success in the UK, it sold over two million copies across Asia. It remains his most successful album.
He left Virgin Records in 2006. He then started his own label called Jayded Records. In 2008, he released the single Ride It, which hit number 11 on the UK chart. This song was part of his second album, My Own Way. This album reached number 6 in the UK and topped the UK R&B Chart.
Success in the United States and later work
From 2008 to 2014, he signed with Cash Money Records. He released the single Down featuring Lil Wayne. This song topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. He became the first male artist of South Asian origin to achieve this chart position. The song sold millions of copies in the US.
He followed this with the hit Do You Remember, which featured Lil Jon and Sean Paul. This track also reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. His American debut album, All or Nothing, reached number 37 on the US Billboard 200. He also contributed to the track What Happened to Us by Australian singer Jessica Mauboy.
