Who is Jaya Prada?
Early life and real name
Jaya Prada was born Lalitha Rani Rao on April 3, 1962, in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her father, Krishna Rao, worked as a Telugu film financier, and her mother, Neelaveni, was a homemaker. She attended a local Telugu medium school in Rajahmundry and began taking classes in dance and music at an early age.
During a school annual function, she performed a dance that caught the attention of a film director in the audience. This led to an offer for a short three-minute dance number in the Telugu film Bhoomi Kosam released in 1974. Although hesitant at first, her family encouraged her to accept the small role.
Film career highlights
Character actor M. Prabhakar Reddy gave her the screen name Jaya Prada and introduced her to the film industry in 1976. That same year, she starred in several major hit films that established her acting credentials. Director K. Balachander cast her in Anthuleni Katha, while K. Viswanath directed her in Siri Siri Muvva, where she played a mute girl with well-known dancing skills.
She went on to star in box office hits such as Adavi Ramudu in 1977 alongside N. T. Rama Rao. Her entry into Bollywood happened when K. Viswanath remade Siri Siri Muvva into the Hindi film Sargam in 1979. She later earned critical acclaim and Filmfare Awards for her work in films like Sagara Sangamam.
Political career
In 1994, Jaya Prada joined the Telugu Desam Party at the invitation of its founder N. T. Rama Rao on the eve of the assembly elections. She actively campaigned in several constituencies and rose quickly through the political ranks. Later, she aligned with the faction led by Nara Chandrababu Naidu after internal party shifts.
She served as a Member of Parliament representing Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, from 2004 to 2014. In addition to her parliamentary role, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha representing Andhra Pradesh in 1996 and held the post of Telugu Mahila President.
Personal life
On February 22, 1986, she married producer Srikanth Nahata. The marriage drew public attention because her husband was already married with children and did not divorce his first wife. She later moved out of the relationship.
Throughout her extensive career, she completed approximately three hundred films across eight different languages. She also owns the Jayaprada Theater located in Chennai and continues to be recognized for her contributions to Indian cinema.
