Early life and real name
Jean-Claude Van Damme was born Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels. His father, Eugene Van Varenberg, worked as a florist and accountant, while his mother, Eliana Van Varenbergh, is Flemish. Growing up in a Roman Catholic household, Jean-Claude began his martial arts training at age ten when his father enrolled him in a Shotokan karate school. He eventually achieved a second-dan black belt in the discipline and later added kickboxing, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai to his skill set.
Martial arts career and records
Before finding success on the big screen, Jean-Claude was a competitive martial artist. From 1976 to 1980, he achieved a record of 44 wins and four losses in semi-contact tournament matches. In 1979, he was part of the Belgian team that secured the European Karate Championship at a tournament in Brussels. His full-contact kickboxing career was equally impressive, resulting in 18 victories, all by way of knockout, against only one defeat between 1977 and 1982.
How Jean-Claude became famous
After arriving in the United States with friend Michel Qissi, Jean-Claude worked as a bouncer, limousine driver, and carpet layer while seeking acting roles. His first film appearance was as an uncredited extra in the 1984 movie Breakin'. He eventually secured his breakthrough role as the lead in the 1988 film Bloodsport. This low-budget martial arts movie became a surprise commercial hit and established him as a major action star. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, he starred in a string of successful projects including Kickboxer, Death Warrant, and Double Impact.

Jean-Claude has been married five times, including two separate marriages to Gladys Portugues. He was also married to Darcy LaPier during the 1990s. He is the father of two children, Kristopher Van Varenberg and Bianca Bree, both of whom have followed their father into the entertainment industry.
