Who is Jefferson Farfán?
Early career at Alianza Lima
Jefferson began his professional path with Alianza Lima in 2001. He helped the team win the Peru championship in 2003. In 2004, he scored 14 goals and won another league title. He was named the best Peruvian player that same year.
He also played for Deportivo Municipal at the start of his career. His early success in the Primera División brought him attention. He left Peru in mid-2004 to join a club in the Netherlands.
Playing in the Netherlands and Germany
Jefferson Farfán moved to PSV Eindhoven for a fee of 2 million euros. He debuted in the Eredivisie on August 14 in a win over RBC Roosendal. He won four Eredivisie titles with the Dutch side. He scored 21 goals in the 2005/06 season to become the club top scorer. He also won a KNVB Cup in his first season.
In 2008, he joined the German team Schalke 04 for around 10 million euros. He won the DFB-Pokal Final in 2011. He scored two goals against Valencia in the 2010-11 Champions League. He is remembered for an 80-meter run in 10 seconds against Bayer Leverkusen on October 23, 2011. In 2012, he became the most expensive Latin American player in the Bundesliga.
Middle East and Russian league
He moved to Al Jazira Club in the United Arab Emirates on July 20, 2015. He won the UAE President's Cup in 2016. He left that club in October 2016 due to a contract breach. He then signed with Lokomotiv Moscow in January 2017.
Jefferson Farfán helped Lokomotiv win the Russian league title in 2018. He scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists during that season. He missed 14 months of play starting in May 2019 because of a knee injury and COVID-19. He returned to the field on July 12, 2020, against FC Ufa.
Peru national team records
He debuted for the Peru national team in February 2003. Jefferson Farfán earned 102 caps and scored 27 goals. This makes him the second highest scorer for his country behind Paolo Guerrero. He helped Peru finish third in the 2015 Copa América.
He played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He scored goals against Paraguay and New Zealand during the qualifiers. Peru finished second in the 2019 Copa América. He had to undergo knee surgery in Barcelona in July 2019. He was suspended from the national team for 18 months, but the penalty was later reduced to three months and a 10,000 dollar fine.
Return to Peru and retirement
Jefferson Farfán returned to Alianza Lima on March 22, 2021. He scored on his debut against Deportivo Municipal on April 6. He won the First Division in 2021 and 2022. He officially retired from football on December 16, 2022.
