Early life and education
Jessie Buckley was born on December 28, 1989, in Killarney, Ireland, to Marina and Tim Buckley. She grew up with a younger brother and three younger sisters in Ireland. She attended Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles, County Tipperary, where her mother worked as a vocal coach and where she performed in various school productions.
She pursued her musical education at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, reaching grade eight in piano, clarinet, and harp. She was also a member of the Tipperary Millennium Orchestra. To further improve her singing and acting skills, she attended summer workshops with the Association of Irish Musical Societies before moving on to formal drama studies.
How Jessie became famous
Jessie began her career in 2008 as a contestant on the BBC talent show I'd Do Anything, where she competed to find a lead to play Nancy in a West End revival of Oliver!. She reached the final and finished in second place behind Jodie Prenger. Despite not winning the top spot, the exposure launched her into the public eye.
Following her television debut, she turned down an opportunity to understudy the role of Nancy and instead made her Off-West End debut in a revival of A Little Night Music at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London. This stage work established her presence in British theatre and led to further acting opportunities.
