Who is Jim Bob Duggar?
Early life and education
Jim Bob Duggar was born in Springdale, Arkansas. His parents were Jimmy Lee and Mary Leona Duggar. They owned and operated a real estate brokerage agency. Jim attended and graduated from Shiloh Christian School.
Political career and elections
Jim entered politics in 1998. He won a seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives for District 6 with 56 percent of the vote. He served as a Republican member from 1999 to 2003. During this tenure, he acted as vice chair of the House Corrections and Criminal Law Subcommittee. He also participated in the Judiciary and Insurance and Commerce committees.
In 2002, Jim ran for the United States Senate. He lost the Republican primary to incumbent Senator Tim Hutchinson. The final vote count was 71,576 to 20,546. He later tried to win a seat in the Arkansas State Senate in 2006. He lost that race to Bill Pritchard by two hundred votes.
Reality TV and business
Jim Bob Duggar is a licensed realtor. He invests in several local commercial properties. He and his family starred in the reality series 19 Kids and Counting from 2008 to 2015. This show was later replaced by Counting On in 2015. This second series focused on his older children and their spouses. Both shows were eventually canceled by TLC.
He co-authored two books with his wife. The first book is titled The Duggars: 20 and Counting! And came out on December 2, 2008. Their second book, A Love That Multiplies, was published on June 7, 2011. Both titles were released by Howard Books.
Marriage and faith
Jim married Michelle Annette Ruark on July 21, 1984. The couple has 19 children. Their oldest son is Josh and their oldest daughter is Jana. They also became permanent guardians for Tyler Hutchins in November 2016.
The family follows Independent Baptist Christian beliefs. They belong to the Institute in Basic Life Principles. This homeschooling program is led by minister Bill Gothard.
Legal issues
Jim Bob Duggar faced public scrutiny regarding his son Josh. In 2006, he reported that Josh molested five girls. He told the Arkansas State Police about these events. A state trooper named Jim Hutchens did not take further action at that time. Josh was later convicted of possessing child pornography in December 2021.
In March 2026, his son Joseph was arrested. He faced charges for unlawful sexual activity with a minor. This incident allegedly happened in 2020 involving a nine year old girl. Joseph was released on a 600,000 dollar bond. His daughter-in-law Kendra was also arrested on March 20, 2026. She faced charges for false imprisonment and endangering a minor.
