Early life and background
Danon Issouf Johannes Djourou Gbadjere was born on January 18, 1987, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. His biological parents were Joachim and Angeline. He moved to Geneva at 17 months old. He was later adopted by Danièle, who was his father's first wife and a Swiss national. He has noted that this upbringing gave him two mothers.
His interest in football started at a very young age. His father recalled that Johan would even play with balls while in stores. By the age of 13, he began formal training at the Payerne Training Center. At 15, he joined the local team Étoile Carouge FC in 2002.
