Early life and real name
John Cale Davies Cale was born on March 9, 1942, in the coal mining village of Garnant in Wales. His father, William Arthur George Cale, worked as a miner, and his mother, Margaret Davies, served as a primary school teacher. He discovered a talent for the viola and joined the National Youth Orchestra of Wales at age thirteen. With the help of a scholarship, he studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London, before traveling to the United States in 1963 to continue his musical training.
The Velvet Underground
In 1964, John co-founded the rock band the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed, recruiting Angus MacLise and Sterling Morrison for the initial line-up. John played viola, bass guitar, and keyboards on the band's first two studio albums, The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat.

After leaving the group, John started on a solo career, releasing seventeen solo studio albums, including his 1973 masterpiece Paris 1919, Fear, and Music for a New Society. In 1990, he collaborated with Lou Reed on Songs for Drella, which served as a tribute to Andy Warhol.
