Who is John Lydon?
Early life and real name
John Joseph Lydon was born in Holloway, United Kingdom, on January 31, 1956. His parents were working-class Irish immigrants who moved to London. John grew up in an area that was largely impoverished and had a high crime rate. As the eldest of four brothers, he often had to look after his siblings while his mother dealt with regular illnesses. When he was seven years old, John contracted spinal meningitis and spent a year in the hospital. The illness caused severe health issues, including hallucinations and a memory loss that lasted for four years, leaving him with a permanent spinal curvature.
Rise to fame with the Sex Pistols
In 1975, John became a regular visitor to a London fetish clothing shop named Sex, run by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. McLaren was managing a new punk band called the Sex Pistols and noticed John's distinctive style and ragged look. After John sang along to the shop jukebox, he was chosen as the lead vocalist for the group. With John as the frontman, the band released well-known singles such as Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen, and Holidays in the Sun. Public Image Ltd and later career
Following the end of the Sex Pistols, John founded a new experimental band named Public Image Ltd in 1978. As the lead vocalist and only consistent member, he helped guide the group through numerous changes and musical styles. The band produced eight studio albums and several singles, including Public Image, Death Disco, and Rise. Public Image Ltd went on a hiatus in 1993 before reforming in 2009 to continue recording and performing live music.
