Biography
Who is John Mayer?
Early life and education
John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His father, Richard Mayer, worked as a high school principal, and his mother, Margaret, taught middle school English. He grew up in Fairfield alongside his older half-sister Rachel, older brother Carl, and younger brother Ben. As an elementary student, he spent afternoons playing video games with future tennis star James Blake. For his junior year of high school, he attended the Center for Global Studies at Brien McMahon High School.
After watching a guitar performance in the film Back to the Future, John became fascinated with the instrument. When he turned thirteen years old, his father rented a guitar for him. A neighbor gave him a cassette by Stevie Ray Vaughan, which sparked his lifelong love for blues music. He took lessons from a local guitar shop owner named Al Ferrante and practiced constantly. By age seventeen, he experienced a cardiac dysrhythmia that led to a weekend in the hospital, an event he later credited with helping launch his songwriting.
How John became famous
John enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at age nineteen. After two semesters, he left college and moved to Atlanta with fellow guitarist Clay Cook to form a short-lived rock duo called Lo-Fi Masters. Following the split of the duo, he played at local coffee houses and clubs, building a grassroots following online and offline. He performed at the South by Southwest festival in 2000, which led to a recording contract with Aware Records.
Through Aware Records and its partnership with Columbia Records, John released his debut studio album, Room for Squares, in 2001. The album featured radio hits such as No Such Thing, Why Georgia, and Your Body Is a Wonderland. The latter track won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards. His early success established him as a prominent voice in modern acoustic pop and rock music.
