Biography
Who is Johnny Depp?
Early life
Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963. He was the youngest of four children born to Betty Sue Wells and John Christopher Depp. His family moved frequently during his childhood before settling in Miramar, Florida, in 1970. His parents divorced when he was fifteen years old, and his mother later married Robert Palmer.
During his youth, his mother gave him a guitar, which sparked a lasting interest in music. He dropped out of high school at sixteen to pursue a career as a rock musician. He played in various local groups, including a band called The Kids, before moving to Los Angeles to seek a record deal.
Rise to fame
After moving to Los Angeles, Johnny Depp met actor Nicolas Cage through his then-wife Lori Anne Allison. Cage advised him to pursue acting after he read a biography of James Dean. He landed his first film role in the horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984 after auditioning for director Wes Craven.
He later rose to widespread prominence during the late nineteen eighties as a teen idol. He starred as an undercover police officer in the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990. Although the show brought him big recognition, he eventually felt restricted by the teen idol label and sought out more diverse cinematic projects.
Film career and major roles
Seeking creative independence, Johnny Depp began taking on unconventional roles in films directed by independent and visionary filmmakers. He collaborated with director Tim Burton on fantasy and comedy projects like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, and Sleepy Hollow. These projects established his reputation for playing eccentric and imaginative characters.
His career reached new heights when he portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. This signature role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He received further Best Actor nominations from the Academy for his performances in Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Personal life and legal cases
Outside of his film work, Johnny Depp has pursued musical projects, forming the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. He also established a production company named Infinitum Nihil in 2004 to produce feature films.
In his personal life, he was married to makeup artist Lori Anne Allison in the early nineteen eighties and later to actress Amber Heard from 2015 to 2017. Following their separation, the former couple engaged in high profile legal proceedings and defamation cases in both England and the United States, which drew intense public attention.
