Biography
Who is Jon Anderson?
Early life and education
Jon Anderson: John Roy Anderson was born on October 25, 1944, in Accrington, Lancashire, England. His father, Albert, served in the army entertainment division and worked as a salesman, while his mother, Kathleen, worked in a local cotton mill. He grew up on Norfolk Street as the third youngest of four children alongside his brothers Tony and Stuart and sister Joy.
Anderson attended St. John's School and Accrington St Christopher's Church of England High School. He was not a strong academic student and spent much of his time organising football matches during lunch breaks. At age fifteen, he left school following his father's illness and worked as a farmhand, a lorry driver transporting bricks, and a milkman to support his family.
Musical beginnings and The Warriors
Anderson had no initial desire to become a singer until his brother Tony joined a local group called the Warriors, also known as the Electric Warriors. After a backing vocalist left, Anderson filled the vacancy and found music to be a better financial option than manual labour. The band performed cover songs across Lancashire and the club circuit in Germany for over a year.
The Warriors released two recorded songs, "You Came Along" and "Don't Make Me Blue", in 1965. After the group split in Germany in late 1967, Anderson stayed behind briefly before returning to London in March 1968. He worked at a drinking club in Soho and sang on several demos for EMI Records producer Paul Korda before launching a brief solo stint under the pseudonym Hans Christian.
Co-founding Yes and progressive rock success
In May 1968, club owner Jack Barrie introduced Anderson to bassist Chris Squire of Mabel Greer's Toyshop. The two musicians discovered they shared common musical interests, leading to the formation of a new band. Along with drummer Bill Bruford, guitarist Peter Banks, and keyboardist Tony Kaye, they renamed themselves Yes and played their first gig in August 1968.
Anderson served as the main motivating force for Yes, originating many of their songs and driving ambitious artistic concepts for albums like Fragile, Close to the Edge, and Tales from Topographic Oceans. He was a member of Yes across three distinct tenures and was eventually inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band in 2017.
Solo career and collaborations
Alongside his work with Yes, Anderson developed a solo career starting with his 1976 debut album, Olias of Sunhillow. He collaborated with numerous other musicians over the decades, including Greek keyboardist Vangelis as Jon and Vangelis, Roine Stolt as the Anderson/Stolt project, and Jean-Luc Ponty as the Anderson Ponty Band.
In later years, he toured and released albums with The Band Geeks. He also made guest appearances on albums by artists such as King Crimson, Toto, Tangerine Dream, Iron Butterfly, and Mike Oldfield. In 2009, Anderson acquired American citizenship.
