Who is Julie Delpy?
Early life and family background
Julie Delpy was born on December 21, 1969, in Paris, France. She was born as the only child of actor and theater director Albert Delpy and actress Marie Pillet. Her parents introduced her to the arts at a very young age by taking her to museums and avant-garde theater productions.
She studied filmmaking at New York University Tisch School of the Arts. In 1990, she moved to the United States and later became a naturalized US citizen in 2001 while keeping her French citizenship.
Rise to international fame
Director Jean-Luc Godard discovered Julie in 1984 and cast her in the film Detective. She earned a César Award nomination for her role in Bertrand Tavernier's La Passion Béatrice. Her breakout global role came in 1990 when she starred in Agnieszka Holland's film Europa Europa.
She achieved wider recognition for starring opposite Ethan Hawke in Richard Linklater's independent drama film Before Sunrise in 1995. She later reprised her role as Céline and co-wrote the scripts for the sequels Before Sunset and Before Midnight, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Directing and other projects
Julie made her feature length directorial debut in 2002 with Looking for Jimmy. She also directed, wrote, and co-produced the 2007 film 2 Days in Paris, which featured her real parents playing her character's parents. Her other directorial works include The Countess, Skylab, and 2 Days in New York.
In addition to her film career, she is a musical artist who released an album in 2003 featuring tracks included in the soundtrack of Before Sunset. She also composed the original score for 2 Days in Paris and wrote music for The Countess.
Personal life
Julie divides her time between Paris and Los Angeles. She was in a relationship with German film composer Marc Streitenfeld from 2007 to 2012, and their son was born in January 2009. She married Dimitris Birbilis in 2015.
