Biography
Who is Jupp Heynckes?
Early life and playing career
Josef Heynckes, commonly known as Jupp, was born in Mönchengladbach on May 9, 1945. He began his football path with the amateur side Grün-Weiß Holt before joining his hometown club, Borussia Mönchengladbach, in 1964. During his first professional season, he helped the team earn promotion to the top division by scoring 23 goals. He later spent three seasons with Hannover 96, where he found the net 25 times in league play. He eventually returned to Mönchengladbach in 1970 to begin a highly successful second stint with the club.
As a productive striker, Jupp became the fourth-highest goalscorer in the history of the Bundesliga. He finished his career with 220 goals in 369 league matches. He was particularly dominant during the 1970s, winning four German league titles and one DFB-Pokal. In European competition, he led his side to a UEFA Cup victory in 1975, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Twente. He also reached the European Cup final in 1977, though the team lost to Liverpool. Jupp Heynckes remains the all-time leading scorer for Borussia Mönchengladbach with 195 league goals.
Success with the German national team
On the international stage, Jupp earned 39 caps for West Germany and scored 14 goals for his country. He made his debut in 1967 during a match against Morocco and quickly established himself as a key part of the squad. He was a member of the team that won the 1972 UEFA European Championship, starting in the final against the Soviet Union. His performances during that tournament earned him a place in the official UEFA Team of the Tournament alongside six of his German teammates.
Jupp was also part of the squad that won the 1974 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Although he started the first two games against Chile and Australia, an injury forced him to miss the remainder of the tournament. He watched from the sidelines as West Germany defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the final in Munich. Jupp Heynckes later described missing the final due to injury as a major disappointment that motivated him throughout the rest of his career in football.
Managerial achievements and trophies
After retiring from playing in 1978, Jupp transitioned into coaching. He took over as manager of Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1979 at the age of 34. He later moved to Bayern Munich, where he won four Bundesliga titles across different spells with the club. His most famous season came in 2012-13, when he led Bayern to a continental treble, winning the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the UEFA Champions League. This achievement secured his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in European history.
Beyond his success in Germany, Jupp managed Real Madrid to a UEFA Champions League title during the 1997-98 season. This victory ended a long trophy drought for the Spanish club in that specific competition. Throughout his long career on the bench, he was twice named Football Manager of the Year. His ability to manage high-profile squads and win major trophies in multiple countries made him a respected figure across the sport.
